About the Institute

The Institute of Thoracic Cancers, Leicester was established to consolidate the region’s expertise in thoracic malignancy under one coordinated clinical and academic structure. By uniting five core specialties, the Institute enables faster diagnosis, more consistent treatment planning, and closer integration between clinical practice and research.
Our approach is built on three principles:

Multidisciplinary coordination — Every case is considered by the relevant specialties together, ensuring treatment decisions reflect surgical, oncological, respiratory, radiological, and pathological perspectives.

Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Meetings
Patients referred to the Institute are discussed at regular multidisciplinary team meetings involving Oncology, Thoracic Surgery, Respiratory Medicine, Pathology, and Radiology. This ensures each treatment plan reflects a full clinical picture before it is presented to the patient, and allows the team to respond quickly as new diagnostic information becomes available.
