Our multidisciplinary specialties work together to provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care for patients with thoracic cancers, combining specialist expertise across every stage of the patient pathway.
Respiratory Medicine
Respiratory Medicine provides pulmonary function assessment, bronchoscopic investigation, and ongoing management of respiratory health for patients undergoing thoracic cancer treatment. This specialty plays a central role in early detection pathways and in supporting patients through treatment-related respiratory complications.
Radiology
The Radiology service delivers imaging for diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, and ongoing monitoring of thoracic malignancy, including CT, PET-CT, and image-guided biopsy. Radiological findings are reviewed within multidisciplinary meetings to ensure imaging directly informs the treatment pathway.
Thoracic Surgery
The Thoracic Surgery team provides surgical assessment and intervention for resectable thoracic tumours, including minimally invasive and video-assisted approaches where clinically appropriate. Surgical decisions are made within the multidisciplinary framework, in close consultation with oncology, radiology, and pathology.
Pathology
The Pathology service provides histological and molecular characterisation of thoracic tumours, underpinning diagnosis and guiding targeted treatment selection. Close integration with the wider Institute ensures pathology findings are translated rapidly into clinical decision-making.
Oncology
The Oncology service leads on the medical management of thoracic cancers, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Treatment plans are developed in coordination with surgical and radiological colleagues, informed by the latest evidence in systemic thoracic cancer treatment and by ongoing clinical trial activity where relevant.
Palliative Care
The Palliative Care service provides specialist support to optimise quality of life for patients living with thoracic cancers, helping to manage symptoms, address complex physical and psychological needs, and support patients and their families throughout the course of treatment. Working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, palliative care is integrated alongside active cancer treatment to ensure personalised, holistic care at every stage of the patient pathway.
